Encouraging Manufacturing Excellence, PTSG Optimizes the Use of Alternative Fuels from Leather Waste
Rembang, 20 Juni 2022- PT Semen Gresik (PTSG) optimizes the use of Alternative Fuel and Raw Materials (AFR) by utilizing leather waste from bag production in Grobogan District as the essential additional fuel.
The Senior Manager of Communication and CSR Unit of PTSG, Dharma Sunyata, asserted that the use of leather waste is part of PTSG's continuous improvement to achieve manufacturing excellence, so the factory can operate more efficiently and reduce air pollution levels due to the reduced emissions. In addition, leather waste is considered more economical since one ton of leather waste can replace 1.05 tons of coal.
"Based on the laboratory analysis results, the leather waste from bag production has a fairly high-calorie content (> 4,000 cal). So, this waste has a huge potential to be the alternative fuel, replacing coal as the main fuel," said Sunyata in the press release, Monday (06/20).
He claimed that the trial for the utilization of this leather waste has been conducted since March 2022. In May 2022, approximately 122 tons of leather waste from bag companies in Grobogan District were successfully processed into AFR. Sunyata continued that the targeted TSR (thermal substitution rate) in 2022 was 0.39%.
''As an alternative fuel, leather waste is expected to be optimally absorbed up to 40-50 tons/day in the long term,'' he added.
He also explained that, in facing challenges of the cement industry in the country, especially amidst the rising prices of coal commodities to date, the Company applied three operational excellence strategies, namely cost leadership, environmental sustainability, and innovation.
The innovation of using leather waste as an alternative fuel, he added, proves the Company's commitment to a reliable environmental management system, energy efficiency, and emission reduction in the long term.
